Akira Class (My Version) by Colourbrand Akira Class (My Version) by Colourbrand
Hola peeps!!:salute:

Break from DA did me a good, and now have my mojo back - to all who sent lovely messages - you are in my heart :) (cheesy I know but hey I love the love, not enough in the world - so grab what you can! ;)).

Got a load of pics to show, and to start us off, this is an illustration of one of the most loved ships in the Star Trek universe done in the TMP style - the Akira Class.

Since learning of her from Star Trek: First Contact, this elegant vessel has a lot of love by fans but was treated with a sort of meh by the Powers that be, with this ship appearing twice with prominence - that in the Voyager Ep "Message in a Bottle" and DS9's "What You Leave Behind".

The vessel is a victim of numerous speculation on its size and role; some say its a heavy cruiser; other say its a battleship, or a missile destroyer, even a fighter carrier, with sizes varying from three-hundred to double in size.

I did the Akira like this because I despise (perfectly described by :icondrofdemonology:) the ocean liner looks of TNG ships; I hate all the windows, and the glowing nacelles - they make the thing look like a toy; TMP era ships are the best lookers and I wanted to do a version of this elegant and well designed beauty in that style.

Some may want me dead because of it - to them I say - its a picture; there are a lot worse things out there that warrant such energies :)!

Comments and feedbacks most welcome - and enjoy :)

I absolutely agree with you when it comes to the TNG--> design aesthetic. Just not my favorite, all the ships look like flying nuclear radiation disasters (lol). Much prefer the TOS---TMP design aesthetic, and this TMP style Akira is something I had never imagined, but it's a real beauty. Well done!

Love the TMP era Akira, it's been one of my favorite designs and this is the best looking one. The only thing that could make this better would be a full ortho. Great work, as usual.

That is a really high registration number for a TMP era ship... Had to throw one gripe in there 😁

I think the generally accepted length is 400-500 something meters long. From what I remember its a dedicated carrier, and torpedo ship. With like 10 tubes in the pod, with 2 to both port and starboard on the saucer, and another pair up front. Or something like that. Its pretty ridiculous, but by god do I want one.

I know - why they fitted a ship with so many launchers is silly; some will argue that saturation makes a difference, and is a frightening sight; but munitions run dry very fast :O

Having said that - she is a beauty of a design :D

Thank you sir :D

I guess it makes sense though, considering it was designed to fight the Borg. Since torpedoes are physical weapons you don't have to worry about the Borg adapting to the energy frequency. Also I didn't say this with my first comment, but I really like the redesign. Nacelles threw me off the first time I looked at it, but I kind of like them now. A little surprised you didn't use the TMP saucer.

I agree - I think she is a sweet torpedo killer; I wish they made her more; I think a thousand torpedoes would be frightening - on a war-footing mind :)

As an exploration ship? No...She's a fighter! Pity she was so poor in the films and shows!! She deserves her own series.

Sorry about that - I wanted to make it like it had its own style - not a "super Reliant" - same with the saucer - its own beast :) I wanted her to stand out and not be a horrid Enterprise Fanwank Kitbash.

I am very honoured you love this sir - she is a gem that needs more LOVE :D!

OK, my friend.... time for me to try and get caught up on overdue feedback to friends and craftsmen :)  The backdated design lends something new, for sure. And those shapes... those oddly twisty organics... they must be a bit tough to work with? Good job on those :)

Beautiful.  It looks like a perfect transition from the Miranda class. I'm not sold on the nacelles but I get your point about the originals looking like a toy.I never liked the original nacelles.  I like how you have gotten rid of the awful darker hull plating and greebles to make it  a more TNG like ship.

Nicely done. TMP era hardware, along with that time period, seems never to get any love at all. TNG ships mostly look like ocean liners. That issue could had been easily fixed by deleting three quarters of the windows on all starfleet ships.:) (Smile)

As for the new ST series... Fingers crossed that the Devs would chance a ship and crew during the TMP era.  And, the show will not suck.

I for one love the Akira class, in all its glory! thusly spake the NX-01 is Akira like and I love the ship, just not the show. I agree TMP era ships rule, and this gorgeous lady has been done nicely, I love her lines!!!

She is a gem isn't she? I think a TMP version would do her such justice - and I do agree about the NX-01; the Akira was suppose to be a backdrop ship but she is so well designed, she has sprouted wings!

If only she was given more love in the shows! Ah well

Thank you sir for your visit and great words :D
