Commission: Vicious Vulcan

A Steiner world is struck by a sudden assault from the Free Worlds League. In a remote suburb, local militia scramble to compensate for being caught by surprise. Initial reports tell that the attackers appear to be using Vulcans, one of the most feeble mechs in the Inner Sphere.

Cock sure and confident, the militia take a lacklustre response to the situation; only when they encounter the mechs do they realise how deep the crisis is. The attacking Vulcans have been modified to terrifying levels; instead of the poxy array of feeble weapons – AC/2, MG, Medium Laser and Flamer, these machines have XL engines allowing them to incorporate more heatsinks and better weapons – that being a pair of medium pulse lasers, four small pulse lasers, and a large variant in the right torso. With this new arrangement, the Mariks inflict devastating blows. The fact they are the first wave with backup of an impressive aerial support, the skies are not dark because of the weather.

This is a commission for the great who wanted a depiction of one of his battlemech models in combat. He also wanted it in an urban setting – something I have never done. After a number of problems, came up with the brainwave of a darkened sky and the rest fell into place.

I am proud how this came to pass and the use of different textures and ideas – like the shattering shards of glass, the darkened but brilliant explosions, the brickworks, the buildings, and the laser beams.
