Commissioned: Beware of the Light by Colourbrand Commissioned: Beware of the Light by Colourbrand
"Beware of the light, I was always told; beware of the day, for it is death that unfolds...

I was told it was long ago, in a time when we all could walk in the day and feel no fright, a era when people lived and enjoyed the sunlight.

Then one day, they came from the sky that showered stars. Thousands of them floated overhead and were eerie as they were silent.

From their maws, bubbles appeared, many thought them fun and delightful.

The world walked into their trap, blinded with the awe of their arrival.

The bubbles spat a single tendril that murdered anyone and anything on touch.

Thousands of people died on that error, billions of animals were hunted and killed, and millions more ran in terror.

When the bubbles killed, they then fish away the corpses and took them to the creatures in the sky, to where they were consumed.

As  a consequence, militaries of the world fought back and attacked these beings, and many of those creatures did perish and die; but the aliens were in their thousands, releasing millions of bubbles that slayed the same in number.

The war that followed turned the world into a wasteland; the aliens won on being vast in number and being aloft.

Humanity fell soon after.

However, a weakness was found; the beings could never live in the dark, the night, or the nocturne; they moved with the passing of the sun, for the darkness was lethal to the creatures.

Why this weakness was never victorious to us however, forever remains a mystery.

Now to live, we must scurry in the shadows and live in the underground, so far tied to the nocturnal bound.

For us to venture above, we must time it right, or the killers and their instruments with be back at the rise, and begin their lethal enterprise.

Before many dawns, I saw where we once lived, worked and existed; realms of steel, stone, and glass, monuments to our once glorious past.

Now withered away through time that has gone by.

We scavenge for what we must need, to live and survive, and run when they arrive. Those that fail, will die.

So we run back, back into the dark, into the realm lack of light, to live, creep, hide and survive, in the terrifying world of the night.

Hoping one day this nightmare will end, and we can stay on the surface, and watch the sun rise and descend."

A concept thought of by :iconseasiderock: about "fearing daylight".

This was a real struggle because I had no idea where to go with this - that was until I saw an eerie picture done by Jim Burns and I based it on that.

Trying to do more people - alas with mixed results :(!!

Comments and feedback most welcome :)

Enjoy :D

Dark yet enchanting! OMG Makes me think about the beautiful yet deadly jellyfishes. I like the idea that the large things that spewed those bubbles are creatures and not ships or machines. It's scary.

Well this is an interesting turn of things. Most of the scary stories I've dealt with have to do with staying in the light. But you switched it around for once. Nice job!!

You're welcome. :) (Smile) In any work of art--painting, movie, novel, etc.--it's great to be able to notice something new. As for the ships, I find myself thinking they might not be 'ships' as we understand them; maybe some kind of space life form, instead. ;) (Wink)
