Commissioned: Vigilance Concept by Colourbrand Commissioned: Vigilance Concept by Colourbrand
Another Commission for the great creative soul :iconshoguneagle:

This is a Vigilance Class Medium Cruiser made for the Terran Federation, but built by the Martians. The Martians design ships rather differently from Terran vessels; theirs are more striking, sinister, and predatory.

Initially I had a tough time designing this, because I had too many ideas, and I was trying to be “clever”. In the end, following a chat with :iconshoguneagle: I went with the design philosophy established by :iconhandofmanos: when he did a number of vessels for :iconshoguneagle:

Taking their traits, the piece came together with speed and ease. The addition of the Thunderstorm Fighters (made by the talent :iconbagera3005:) was to make the scene more. I added lights and a powerful backdrop to highlight the designs’ darkness.

Please let me know what you think, and the above people, pop by their pages – they are talents galore :D

Enjoy!!

Certainly not one to be trifled with, I see! I'm liking the stats on this one- the onboard sensors are terrific, and the arms she bears are frightening. I would not like to get into a scuffle with this thing even if I had a
cruiser of my own! It's interesting, though, that cleverness wasn't the real contributor to this one. I guess a rudimentary understanding of culture really adds a lot more to ship design than I'd think. I'll take that a
note on that! :)

I gotta say, the result here with the much more imposing-looking ship works well with her stats (especially the armament!). It reminds me of the way some animals evolve, developing certain markings or defences
of their own that blare a loud "Stay away" to their opponents. It looks to me, seeing as the Vigilance spends most of its time around Mars, as though the Martians are trying to keep people out of Mars; out of
curiosity, are they a particularly isolationist or militaristic faction?

Lastly, the light on the left side of the Vigilance looks just awesome. It provides just enough of an outline to prevent the structure from fading into the dark background altogether without making it look contrived.
The red accents are terrific, highlighting the predatory appearance of the vessel, and her sloped front adds to that even more. :)

Reading this comment has given me some food for thought! I originally based the idea of the style :iconHandoManos: does his Martian ships for :iconshoguneagle:. Maybe there is a covert threat in the story that the Martians design stuff differently for that reason; I do know that the Matians in :iconshoguneagle:'s story were once enemies to humanity....

Thank you for the great words here, I did struggle with this because Matian ships are darker, and how do you see darkness in darkness? Shine up the backdrop plus add a wee glint to the structure.

Glad you love this sir - tell :iconshoguneagle: too - that'll make his day :D

Always a joy my friend :D

Those subtle implications wouldn't surprise me. Knowing Shogun's mind, I would imagine he's got something interesting coming with the Martians in their dealings with humans which may have something to do with their designs.
Maybe they're hunkering down for a surprise, or something similar... ;)

Exactly, hey? Darkness on darkness doesn't work well for the artist, but it's a terrific and completely logical thing to do for a cruiser, especially one specializing in military stealth. That is a very clever thing you have done! :D

The pleasure is mine!

Interesting. Very minimal. It's almost like the ships in Close Encounters, defined not by the shapes of their hulls but strictly by their configuration of lights.

What an interesting analogy! Well must admit I wanted to show the shape of this dark beauty but I thought the backdrops I had were not up to it, so hence the running lights.

Then I got the backdrop right....

Cheers sir :D
