This is a picture of another of my favourite battletech vehicles.
A group of Monitors Naval Vessels enter an area on a dawn raid, supported by four Warrior H-7 VTOLs. Their mission is to find the enemy and take them out. However, the enemy are anything but feeble and a fierce firefight breaks out. In the process, a H-7 is shot down and ploughs into a Monitor with terrifying effect.
The best bit for me is the explosions of the water – all blop and spill – think I caught it well.
What I liked about the Monitor is its concept – it’s a kit made by Nav Hulls sold to anyone. All they need is a means to float and carry the equipment; Nav Hull supplies the electronics, the armour, and a navalised Demolisher turret, complete with two AC/20s.
However, aside of the original drawing, I cannot see the point in mounting so many close ranged weapons – two AC/20’s and three SRM 2s limit the ship.
So (especially for you stat hounds) I did modified versions for this pic – each Monitor still has their jump troops, but I did away one of the AC/20s; that allows the adding of an LRM 10 (or anything similar) for long range hitting power, and four machine gun batteries for picking off infantry and giving covering fire supporting the SRM 2s.
The H-7s in this are also a favourite of mine and a well designed ship. I also modified that from its silly armament of an AC/2 and a single SRM 4 (despite the original drawing having paired SRM 2s. I went for a machine gun for close quarter strafing runs on say troops and light vehicles, and a pair of LRM 5s for long range punch – the average VTOL has little chance on the battlefield except at long range – a poxy AC/2 does what? Two LRM 5s are better odds.
I'll hold my hand up and say I'm not a big fan of the Monitor or most of the surface ships in BattleTech, but you've captured the look of them perfectly.
For me though the real draw is the Warrior gunships. I love the Warrior it's one of the few VTOLs in the game that works and looks like a VTOL without descending into stupidity (I'm looking at you Ripper).
You say he average VTOL has little chance, I respectfully disagree sir. I've played many a game where VTOLs have saved the day, they're light and weak armoured (usually) sure, but they're fast and nimble. Besides most people see them as little more than a nuisance and will ignore them, which can be a costly mistake. Especially if equipped with heavy hitting weapons or TAG.
Well I understand, and many have agreed on that - they regard this wee machine as a plot piece rather than a fighting machine. Long as there is a Vietnam style river delta situation, this thing 'will' be there.
I like the idea and the tech behind the Monitor, why it was built hence why I did this. To be honest, a better armed Hovertank would be more ideal, but even so, this craft and the backstory appeals to me.
The gunships I loved doing and numerous people love the way I have portrayed them, and I knew it appeal to you sir .
I also agree there are a load of really shit designs.
The Nightshade is one; what is that wing section about eh?
Then there is the hideous SHITBUCKET the Cyrano!!! How can someone design something THAT BAD!??!
The Kestrel looks like a turkey fed with turkey twizzlers, the Perigrine looks like a flying caravan, the Donar looks like a mechanised muppet, and the Sprint looks like it F**ked an elephant!
And what the hell is the Yasha suppose to be?
I liked the look of the Warrior - looked a proper chopper so I made her here as such. Was never content with the silly weapons it had, so went my way; however a number of wise people have pointed out that what I had done was clever but made this frail thing more targetted.
PersonallY I agree too - VTOLs are very valuable, but many have pointed out the overwhelming firepower of mechs; and as you have pointed out, they are more versatile if given a chance. One said that the Yellow Jacket with its aireal Gauss gun is a terrible threat; just imagine a fleet of these things with aireal anti-missile systems.
That is what I tried to do here, show that they had/have some meaning and trying to think outside the BT games box. Think them as REAL machines. Like with the Monitor - all its weapons short ranged? WTF?
I mean this, your feedback is a joy and again has fired this debate
Cheers a bundle, glad you love this and an utter pleasure you visiting sir
I think you're spot on with your thoughts on the majority of VTOLs in BattleTech most of them just don't look right. As a player whole likes things to look right (as if anything can be really said about that given the nature of the game). My favourites are the Pinto and the Warrior. they look like VTOLs. Though the printed artwork does the Pinto no justice at all.
There is of course the Karnov which is by far one of my favourite units (that's my ComStar side is coming out again ) despite it's lack of weapons, but hey it's a transport unit not a combat unit.
There's also nothing wrong with going your own way when loadouts are concerned, many people like to tweak them to better reflect what they want the unit to do. Some have managed to make it into an art form as well - Heh, do I need to mention a certain merc owned Blood Asp?
I do feel the naval side of BattleTech is an overlooked area, much like the support side, still it's a game about big walking tanks and honestly boats don't really figure in that equation. There are a few uses for them and to be honest it's great that you can see that as well. To bad TPTB don't put as much effort into these areas as they do into designing 'Mechs. Someone really needs to design some wet navy ships.
Thank you very much for commenting

Still, this is another stunning image my friend.

Always a pleasure my friend.
Well considering the chop and changes they do in the BT world, why not?
And yes sir yer have
May do a pic of a Karnov one day....
Well I put it down to the PHWWORR factor - cannot exactly be terrified by a boat can you....
No worries sir
DAMN YOU!
Well on that - If I am in the mood, if I know what I am doing and my euphoria is high, usually about six hours to a few days (work and other things).
If the opposite, can take months, even years.
Thank you for taking time to pop by and comment
