Triton on escort duty by Colourbrand Triton on escort duty by Colourbrand
“Captain’s Log: Stardate 25445.3

USS Triton, NCC-2201: Captain B. Schmidt recording.

The Triton and its crew have been assigned escort duty to Starbase 102. Over the past two weeks, a number of vessels have either been attacked, destroyed or have gone missing due to Klingon incursions en route there. Now the base has been the victim of a major assault. Starbase 102 managed to defend itself but it suffered. So fearing that the Klingons will be back with the possibility that they may take 102 as a base of their own or a trophy, the Triton has been assigned to the region as part of a gradual build up of a task force to go Klingon Hunting!

The ships I am escorting consist of three transports; two tankers and a freighter. These are needed to start the plans aforementioned – fuel and ready war materials. With these immediate stockpiles, we can make a presence here.

However, to get to Starbase 102 I have plotted a course that takes us through an area near 102 called the Canopus Cloud. It’s a dust field that we can scan quite well, and will hopefully expose any cloaked ships or hide us from immediate detection.

To make sure the mission succeeds, I have been assigned a fleet of ships – two Genser Class Escorts: the USS Edge, and the USS Trailblazer; four squadrons of Scorpio Class Corvettes, and to my delight, the USS Wisp, a Ranger Class Scout.

The Wisp is a ship my crew helped rescue from Klingon attack a month back, and on learning we needed some extra ears, Captain Mason was eager to offer his services to me.

Who says good deeds do not go unrewarded?”

Once again I have raided my childhood and resurrected a few ship designs from the FASA game of Star Trek.

I feature the Triton Class in this picture showing a different angle, so if anyone likes the design can admire it more or even make a 3D model. The original is awful but the idea is fantastic hence my re-design. I added a secondary hull, because I felt it would look better. The pylons are different, and they are styled along the lines of the Constellation Class where the nacelles are side mounted – makes a lot more sense than the original idea! Also the saucer is its own, not again a Constitution kitbash – I have no qualms about kitbashes but lets make them look worthy, eh?

The end result to me is a better looking original ship.

The freighters are based on a design briefly glimpsed in Star Dock in Star Trek III, a basic neck with warp drives and some cargo modules slung under. This I chose to use my imagination to base the design. It’s no doubt different but it looks the business.

The Gensers I based on the Oberth Class but with a different second hull, and stronger warp drives. Again the original design is just shit, but the idea is sound, and of all the escorts in the FASA game, this is the best looker. The original had a saucer like the Constitution, and a titanic second hull, but only armed with phasers? Please. I went with that aspect but made it smaller just; after all they are escorts.

The Wisp is based off one of the few great designs in the FASA books, the Ranger, and she is a good looking ship – only they had her in the films.

Finally the fighter like vessels are Scorpio Class Corvettes – again I loved the idea, but the designers fluffed the shape, so I based the idea on a ship that has the traits of a typical shuttle, but mounted the one warp drive, similar to the types the Oberth possess. I think they look rather sweet.

Love to hear your thoughts and opinions please.

Enjoy!

I really love the Gensers class! I've always had an interest in the Oberth although I didn't think
much of its design at all. Yours is much better!

I'm curious I've gotten interested in ships schematics lately.
How big are each of these ships and what are their crew complements?

Well my friend, there is a website that covers that part of the franchise; these ships were part of the FASA series of trek adventures - most of the designs are now consigned to dust; most were awful too!

This is the Genser's factfile as well as a link to the site that covers this issue.

Enjoy!

Great link!

Here's one that I like to use. I looked at it a lot when I was trying to puzzle out the Delphis class

Your freighter designs have a no-nonsense, frills-free elegance about them, with all the practicality of current container ships with their loadable, swapable and - if worse comes to worst - jettisonable cargo modules. Having interchangeable cargo and liquid bulk modules offers much greater flexibility than anything afforded by dedicated designs. While the Enterprise gets all the glory, it's logistics that keeps any fleet going.

I do hope the Wisp's skipper's (Captain Mason) first name isn't William for his sake; if it is, he becomes Will O' the Wisp! (Sorry, just could NOT resist:))

Well they were inspired by a shot of something like that in the Spacedock scene in Star Trek 3. Look on Bernd Schneider's Ex Astris Scientia site. Its very brief but from what I see it looks similar.

I wish Trek did more freighers instead of crap models. Ah well...

Damn - what a great pun :D LOL!!!!Well played sir :D

Actually they were Scorpio Class 2 Corvettes from the old FASA Star Trek Board Game.

Think Danube Runabout but more fighter like.

These ships all look just terrific. I love how you've lightened and shaded them- it is,
in my opinion, a more realistic composition- the kind one actually would see in space.

I am really liking the story here, too; I found all the crafts easy to identify!
My favourite designs here have got to be the freighter, the USS Wisp, and the Scorpio Corvettes! :D

Why thank you sir - I think they are too. Snag is that the original designs are so awful that people cannot comprehend the idea of thinking outside the box, modifying these to be better!

Another struggle is the compositon. I was going for the usual nebula, orbital planet, then bare space, but this worked so well. Also I wanted people to see the ships.

I am also glad that you understood the ships with no sense of confusion. Its easy for the writer to forget - even commit that sort of faux pas.

Well like them eh? Hehe, have to do more!!

An absolute pleasure sir :D

The originals do sound awful. Where can I find images of them??

Spatial composition, I would assume, can be quite difficult, as you
have a lot going on in space (nebulae, stars, clusters, etc).
Sometimes minimalism is the best way to portray the important factors.

It was really quite easy! You should be proud!

No rush, no rush. :)

As requested - [link]

Trust me they are hideous - especially the orignal Gensers.

I have no qualms with 'kitbashes', the Reliant is the best example - to a lesser extent so is the Stargazer. However, its how its done - sticking a saucer on a second hull with X-amount of nacelles really presses my cider. If one is going to make a new Star Fleet ship, stick with its ideology but work with it, not bastardise it.

I agree, and my philosophy is less is more!

I am getting the hang of being proud sir - slowly but sure.

Pleasure :D

Uuugh-- hideous! Some of these shouldn't have even left spacedock!

Reliant looks fine. I like its design a lot- looks very structural.
The Makin looks pretty good to, IMO.
But some like the Andor and the Wilkerson?? Just awful.

Thanks for the look!

Hey Hand,

Hmm,Yer have a point - I was really struggling to get the composition right, and in ways I still have some issues, but its my first fleet scene so feedback like this is very welcoming. :)

Thank you also for liking the aspects of different ships - its something they should have done more often than the lone Enterprise.

Thank you very much for your support sir, most appreciated :D

I agree that it is great to see more, and different ships. It is not all Enterprise in Starfleet after all. And perhaps you could try distancing ships more? It might work. Keep in mind I have not yet made a fleet or taskforce shot myself so...

No that is handy info, something I can put to in another creation - more distance. Good advice!

Hey now we both know where to do it right, lets see what we come up with :D

And yes, considering Star Fleet is HUGE, it would be nice to see other ships do something that the starring vessel taking centre stage all the time.

Always a pleasure sir - always :D

Hey hey! Cheer Karanua.

I love the Ranger Class, one of the few ships they should have had in the franchise proper. Its a neat shape, compact, modern, but modest. May do a pic of the Ranger alone in some capacity one day. :)

I agree, its overlooked - its a neat ship, and a shame its missed/ignored.

Thank you very much for your positive words sir, most welcoming :D

There were plenty ships from the old FASA books that should have been canonized so to speak but most needed new artwork because the ship schematics they did were attrocious in a lot of cases and rarely if ever matched the stats of the ship that were provided alongside. I'm still in a FASA game at present an ongoing campaign but for the last two years we've been using Ricky Wallace's "Madverse" ships that are like an intermediate generation between the Kelvin and the New Enterprise. The FASA rules match the JJ reboot universe surprisingly well plus its introduced star trak to a whole new generation of gamers.

Interesting about the the JJ Universe fitting with FASA, maybe JJ was a closet fan!
