Vulcan Patrol

Description

This picture was inspired by a fantastic story that was one of many elements that got me into Battletech.

It is a depiction of a lance of Vulcans patrolling an area on the world of Sappho that has been seized by the Free Worlds League in a recent invasion; along with them are a few troops. Above a lance of Guardian VTOL jets give air cover. This group are guerrillas fighting against the occupying force as a resistance movement.

The Guardian fighter was developed and used mainly by House Liao of the Capellan Confederation; it was made to cover their dwindling aerospace fighter assets but maintaining the need for aerial cover. I liked the logical reason why this came to pass.

Also I am a big fan of the VL-2T Vulcan; whereas most love the heavy machines because they have tons of armour and bags of firepower, the Vulcan is one of a few mechs that have a proper purpose – in this case anti-infantry. It is not much of a machine but that is the point – she has limits but that means one has to think more when going into battle. Besides would one waste a heavy machine in an urban area? Something like this or the Urbanmech is ideal.

Finally some will recognise the backdrop – its of an old pic I had done ages ago – just brushed it up for this.

Enjoy!

Ok, months (a year?) later I find this image unforgettable. The mechs are unusual, and, the scene composition is beautiful, it all highlights the front mech in the foreground. The idea of these anti-infantry mechs would be absolutely evil - if you were some "boots on the ground" and this was coming your way.

This conversations here, I don't know much about Battletech to be honest, but yeah, I've also noted (war)gamers in-general have a fixation on big, expensive weapons with a lot of armor and hit-points, and charging straight up the middle.

IRL military hardware is not built to look "cool", it's find the cheapest thing that will get the job done, and these "skeleton" mechs, NOT encumbered by 50 tons of armor, fit the bill.
