Wisp Recon by Colourbrand Wisp Recon by Colourbrand
“Captain’s Log: Stardate 29000.1

USS Wisp, NCC-616: Captain P. Mason recording.

It has been four months since the incursion and following assault on Starbase 102 by Klingon raiders.

So far, all has been quiet in that period, suggesting one of three things; either it was a rare opportunity, the Klingons are pre-occupied elsewhere, or they are readying forces for one hell of a push.

Whatever the case, we have been building up a nice little nerve centre here to track and check Klingon activity; So far we have an orbital office station in place allowing and overseeing the construction and maintenance of a planned series of vast sensor arrays.

Supporting that operation are four Cle Dan Class Tenders, which each house a vast array of work bees to commence the construction detail as well as onboard factories to manufacture small items. They have managed to finish the first sensor array and are going over it to see if all that hard work has paid off.

These vehicles are impressive. Not only do they build vast orbital facilities, they also assist in the rapid repair of damaged ships.

On the subject of ships, we have only Scorpios defending the place, but a number of ships are out there looking for any threats.

And on looking, this is where we come in. The Wisp is off on a thirteenth mission to scout for Klingons or whatever. I am always confident of my crew and this ship but I feel nervous. We were lucky to evade two Klingon cruisers once; only the timely arrival of Captain Schmidt and the Triton saved us.

However luck is a mistress – always unfaithful.”

Did this for a friend, :iconi-plexiglass: who wanted to see more of the Wisp and the Scorpios; I did this scene trying to mimic the Grissom over Genesis, but it was just dull. I added bits in the backdrop and it just built up.

The array I am proud of and love how the impulse modules came out on the Scorpios.

I also added the Cle Dan tender there, a great idea again never done. The moon was put in last to balance the picture.

Did the best I could with the Wisp – a Ranger Class Scout, and personally it’s a great design, albeit limited – a match for the Klingon Bird of Prey, due to its two torpedo bays and four phasers.

Alas FASA and Paramount had different ideas…

However, if anyone wants to have a crack at it, please do. Most likely do a far better job than this.

Enjoy! :D

NB: Have updated this one because there was a major mistake to it - now hopefully amended. Apologies for any embarrassment caused.

I like this design. I would like to imagine a re-scaled variant that would be crewed by 9 persons MAX.
Three tactical: Helm, Tactical, Communications.
Three Science: Science-sensors, Bio-SCI, Medical.
Three engineers: Captain, Quartermaster, Engineer.

What is a wisp class? What is a scorpios class? This looks smaller than the typical Retrofit Ranger class Scout.
Is there a smaller "Patrol"-"Courier" type of vessel?

The Wisp is a Ranger class scout - just I call it the USS Wisp.

Loved the Ranger and wanted to do some pics of her - and it caught on my friend :D

In the FASA RPG, it was crewed by 80 peeps.

The Scorpio is a "corvette" - think a big armed shuttle - and had a crew of four and was well armed!

Details at the time of the Ranger were sketchy hence this.

Thanks for the interest sir :D

It's SOOO good to see the old Ranger class, again. Back when FASA came out with this ship I loved the scale/size and design... but even then I was an old school TOS guy. So I did my own version in the TOS style and laid out in Tech Manual format. I really should dig that out and upload it sometime. Heck, if I get off my butt and start modeling this year, that would make a great early project! Thanks for the memories, inspiration, and (as always) your great art execution!

You know what? I like the name of that vessel. Wisp. And I love you for mentioning Captain Schmidt again. Made me wear a stupid grin all day ... :giggle:

I like this scene. It looks so peaceful, almost serene. And good job on all those tiny details.

I feel flattered, I do!

This is just how I expected it; the Wisp here looks just terrific,
and those Scorpios are just awesome. Really liking the design
of the space station in the background.

Love the balance with the planet in the background. Ye done good, sir!
Cheers!

Yes i did matey (shame I dunno how to paste your icon on here) so let it not be said that no good deed goes unrewarded.

I am glad you noticed the balance of the planets - the image did not work without somethig there. The space station I did a spin on the orbital office in TMP.

The Ranger class is limited so I tried to do it like how they could model it. Hit and miss I feel - same with the scorps. However the impulse energy makes it for me.

Pleasure always sir and thank you for popping by and commenting :)

Aww, that's okay! You type in :icon, add the person's name, and put a colon
after it. A golden rule, that is!

I can envision the pic without the planet; but good thinking there, the planet
just ties everything together. :)

You did well with it, considering you were hindered. It's my pleasure, sir-
truly flattered, I am! :D

Very well done-as usual. Though the ships don't stand out as you usually make them. However the forms and the ideas are great. Sure, the orbiters still got some tricks up their sleeves. I don't think they'll let the Klingons alone for very long. Watch the skies!!!

This is one great design and the scene is also grant! I do like the addition of the communications array and freighter in the background. The Ranger Class Scout is also a good looking vessel :)

Thank you sir - one tries.

The freighter was added in to carry on the story of their arrival at Starbase 102. I liked how the array turned out too.

The Ranger is a good design, shame the powers that be never took it up....

Thank you very much for popping by and commenting - most appreciated :D
